I like Version 2 a lot more. It is cleaner and a lot more corporate and I think that is what clients are looking for these days.
The first one is a little more creative, but it might not be as appreciated.

its what you leave out thats ...
the basic colours are cool
the only negative thing i would mention is ... navigate your site as if you had an iq of 80 ... if you do that sucessfully you have a good nav system
my point obviously is youve got a great , but techy nav system
apart from that its extremely good design

like you said in 1st version... design alone will not make a good website...

No way, version one is class! The one with the lift shows waht you can do, and Id be happy if I made that site. Excuse me by my customer want to see what I can do, not how boring I can be - they want their sites boring, not the designers site.

If I had to pick one it would be version 1. Although IMHO I think both need additional work to clean them up.

Well, since number 2 didnt finish loading, Id have to go with the first one. Its nice.
