Is it me or is it every other site out there is some futuristic effort with tiny text nobody can see, loads of scanlines, preloaders that all say 'connecting with interface', 'satallite uplink initiated', 'logon to the last server at the end of the universe' or someother crap like that.

We dont live in 2020, life isnt like 'blake 7' or 'logans run' so stop pretending.

    GET ON WITH IT !!!!!

there are many many sites that don't have those characteristics, there are many that do because it's still a favoured style, but go to http://www.stereotypography.com and look through all the links there, you'll find plenty of good ones that aren't in that style.

this was one i was looking at this morning http://www.codeandtheory.com and this is one of the most popular sites at the moment, http://www.wrecked.nu

there's plenty of freshness out there.

A lot of the websites I've been on to recently don't even have any Flash on them, they're completely static. It's been ages since I've seen one like you describe.

Alot of portfolio sites and web design company sites I've seen have extremely small text and lots of grey. I guess it's just a fad

Remember that you work, live play in this environment- the average web surfer probobly doesn't see this style that often and so it looks really fresh when they see it-

people say to me still- have you seen this site---2advanced.com?

I hate that site, the work is good but there are still many nicer sites around. For my money it's overrated.

    Hmmmmm

Well i've sobered up now, but i still stand by what i say, although there are some great designs out there, there are also shed loads of crap space ones. To be honest, when surfing around you don't come across em, gernerally only when i'm on here doing site checks or on the cool sites forum. It was cool a couple of years ago - Move on people

Also the Pixel Police popped round and i stated by case that pixel fonts are fine (if you use them properly and read the bloody text file which is always attatched, that tell you, you need to place them on a whole pixel), rather than just bunging em in and then complaining that your text looks blurred CAN SOME PEOPLE NOT READ !!!

Anyway they seemed happy and let me off with a caution.

I think i'll reach for the bottle again.

    Loaf

PS Cre@te Online is noe £6.00 cover charge with no CD - whats that all about.

Ugh... don't get me started on that load of crap!
Are they still rehashing old articles and trying to pass them off as a look into the past?

They printed a complaint of mine and mannaged to get my name wrong... a bunch of overpaid arses, don't waste your money.

Waste of money. You get more information online. Over a year with the cash saved, you can buy some sample CD's, or a cheap MIDI keyboard, Photoshop filters, fonts, or a nice piece of kit like Top Style.

I always felt their showcase links were old. It had GUI Galaxy in it a few issues back that has been around for some time.

The front covers are terrible (remember that one with the blond woman with the star burst going out her hands), and it takes you around 12 pages to get into the magazine, past all the art work, adverts, large photos of people looking at each other and page contents.

The software/hardware reviews you can get out of Computer Arts and their cover CD is better, though .net did have good CD's for new browsers and freeware.

Create should have more working examples, tutorials, interviews and design challenges.

Along those lines...check http://www.altoids.com for an (as I think) even fresher look with an out of the box design.
