Yes, apparently to combat illegal gambling, they've banned all computer games...

    i'm not so sure...

Three months after promising to instantly outlaw all electronic games from the public domain in the wake of a heated public debate on widespread illegal gambling, the government tabled a bill to that effect in Parliament yesterday.

The draft law, presented by the Economy and Finance Ministry, bans any form of “electric, electro-mechanical and electronic” game devices, including computers, from hotels, coffee shops, club premises and public areas in general. This will not apply to Internet cafes, which, however, will not be allowed to offer their clients computer games.

The police will be responsible for catching offenders, who will face fines of 5,000 to 75,000 euros and imprisonment of one to 12 months.

The blanket ban was decided in February after the government admitted it was incapable of distinguishing innocuous video games from illegal gambling machines.
I don't actually think this is a hoax...for a start why would two newpapers just make this up? It's not like it's april 1st, and making claims like this could cause serious legal trouble with the greek govt if they're just plain made up...any greek residents to confirm or deny?

    Greek police.

Can't catch terrorists, now can't tell which games could be games of chance.

Anyone in Greece? I highly recommend you get into the underground gaming business. Now. OOOh la la, you's gonna make a bundle of cash.

We allow gambling in the united states there is no such reasoning to ban games cause gambling IS allowed.

Nah, the register sourced out from a greek english language paper as well as their own story...i think it's real

The Register is more known for serious comp news in a comedy way than comedy comp news in a serious way...

Yes, I am afraid it's true. They are going to ban all electronic games played in stores. They are NOT going to ban games for pc.

I agree that this is stupid but they did that to avoid the illegal cazino games.

You would of course think that they could ban only the illegal ellectronic gambling and not all the games, but they tryied to do it and they fail...

As I think you know, greeks are very cleaver when they want to make money, so they find all the possible ways to accomplish that. So they created games and put them in shops. Perfectly legal games, like packman. But with a remote control they could change the game and make it a gambling game.

When a customer that wanted to play the game was entering the shop, was going to the owner and tell him a password phrase (like in spy movies) and then the owner would change the game to its illegal version. If the police was coming to for a search, he will press the remote control and the games will be legal again...

So for a long time police could not arrest them. So after many efforts they started closing the shops but they still managed to open new ones with legal games as a cover.

Finally, the greeck goverment chose to ban all electronic games played in shops, but this has not took effect yet...
