    Smooth fading

this is really hard to explain but-

How do PS'ers get such smooth edges when combining pictures, not just cutting and pasting them next to eachother but combining them with layers and putting them on top of eacthother. Everything is just peiced together so perfectly. How?
Do they select what they want of the picture than feather it or what?

I hope you know what I mean and I thank anyone who is kind enough to respond. Feel free to ellaborate

There are many ways of doing it, layer masks are one, or simply erase using a largeish (soft) brush, also u can use the lasso tool with feather of 12+ (depends on the size of your image)

    this is a starting point

    If I were you.,.....

First of all,... makesure that there is no 'background' layer
For the object, try remove all unwanted background colour, leaving only the object you want.... then select the object area (CTRL click)..... Select menu SELECT->MODIFY->CONTRACT
contract to image to 5 pixels (depends on your need)... once you contract, apply the gaussin blur effects (EFFECTS->BLUR->GAUSSIAN BLUR)...
    This should look good....
