    Ha,
it's not such a simple question really.

I haver a Pentax Optio 330 which I really love. Small as a cigarette pack and good quality images but there are heaps better.

Like all technology it depends what you can afford.

Here are some pics taken with my camera a little while back -

-- How much are you willing to pay?
-- How do you want to use it? (e.g. small, lightweight, and don't care much for it -- go to nightclubs and click-clicky)
-- What do you want to use it for? (web use, print or both?)

If you answer the above questions truthfully, then you are two steps closer to getting your "perfect" digicam.

One thing for sure is, don't be too impressed by digital zoom -- they are hopeless.

You want a small "cheap" digicam for web use:
SiPix Blink -- released a couple of months ago and received a few good reviews. Smaller than a credit card but can take pics at 800x600pixels (good enough for web). Last I heard it cost around £40 but by now, it should be cheaper. It is better than L'espion.

You want an ok digicam for web and maybe print uses:
Fuji Finepix A101 (my digicam) -- it cost me around £140 (inc. P & P, 32Mb card,etc.). It has been brilliant for me. Only regret is that it does not have an optical zoom. Its resolution is 1.2MP (MegaPixels) and LCD (which is great for taking pics at a sun!). Here are my pics: http://nadboy.bizhosting.com/pic/ (the quality used was "Normal" -- imagine if "Fine" was used... no touching-up were used -- the pics you see are what came out of that digicam. BTW, ignore the garden folder, the pics were taken to um help a fellow FK member about garden problems.

You want a wonderful digicam with loads of features and good for anything:
Some digicams cost at least £200+ with optical zoom, huge MP specification. Good ones I heard include Minolta Dimage, Canon G(something), Nikon Coolpix and Fuji Finepix (in my opinion, go for Finepix if you can afford it).

The bottom line is you may want a resolution of at least 1.2MP, you should be ok.

If you want more info, post here.

    digital camera

The Canon G3 is the best around. With 4 megapixels, good price and looks to match, this is an all-rounder worthy of your custom. See canon-europa.com for more.

for site check forum. I go there quite often and it was becoming a lot of hassle in putting in "your site....my PC is IE6, blah blah...".

Anyway back to topic. Agreed, Canon G3 is pretty good -- a lot of good reviews but then again so is Nikon Coolpix 5700.

These are my feature recommendations for a digi camera:

manual settings for arty shots (rather than just point and click)
    at least 2 megapixel resolution
tft display- so you can review what you've taken and decide if you need to take more etc.
    continuous shooting for image sequences

the cheapest camera with these features will set you back about £180 in the UK

and that's really all I look for in a camera but it depends on what you're using it for. A couple of other tips: ignore digital zoom its complete ********, the camera basically cheats! go for optical zoom and IMO video recording features aren't worth the time/money

This is pretty much the only site you need to find out what camera you want: http://www.dpreview.com/

You can compare/contrast different camera features, view sample images, read the reviews...pretty much everything you would need.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 885. It's been perfect for me. You can check out some various macro shots as well as regular and b/w pictures I've taken with the camera at my site.

To echo what others have said...digital zoom is useless and fraudulent.

As far as digital camera's...I wouldn't get less than 3 mp, if you're going to use this for webdesign and things like that.

I have one with 1.3 mp...which is okay, but the quality just isn't there.

Not necessarily, I have Fuji A101 (1.3MP) and the quality IS there. I will be putting up a couple of pics this weekend (at Pic Exchange thread) -- the pics produced by this 1.3MP digicam was surprisingly good. Maybe I was lucky with this digicam? Who knows?

I agree 100%. I have use that camera extensively and it is great! The photos produced are top notch. The colours are unbelievablely sharp....one down fall is when recording a 5MP TIFF (highest rez) file, it does take quite a while for it to write. I would highly recommend buying it...but be sure to factor in another memory card of at least 256 MB (that gives you 16 5MP shots, i think).

I'm looking to buy a digital camera as well. My sis & I are going halves to pay for it and she's left me to do all the work.

We'll mostly be taking pics with it, and I want at least 3.0 Megapixel, and as for video recording, maybe, but not important.

Anyone got either of these models?
    - Canon PowerShot Digital IXUS V3
    - SONY Cyber-shot DSCP7 (3.2) or the DSCP9 model
    - Kodak EasyShare DX4330

I've only started looking around and still undecided.
