Hands up who's actually studied Design

Now I am not trying to cause offence, but I was just thinking:

Is it just me, or is anyone else fed up with seeing sites that are crap?
I constantly see sites where you can tell that the 'designer' is obviously someone who has learned how to use Flash or HTML, yet has no background in design. Then these people have the cheek to call themselves 'Designers'.
Green backgrounds with red text, Impact as the font for main bodies of text etc.
You can spot it a mile off, it winds me up.
Typography, alignment, colour theory...........do these people even know what these words mean???

sorry, I'm going on a bit.

Anyway, whether you have studied design and you agree, or if you have no design background and you think I am wrong then let me know.

I actually studied Typography & Graphic Communication for four years at University in the UK, and although that was in pre-internet days, the training I got has proved useful in both HTML and Flash development.

Illustrator
Color Theory
Advanced Information Design
Interface Design
Advanced Digital Illustration
Logo Design

just to name a few things... but does that make me a designer?

Dunno,

I guess it all depends on how indepth the training was,
whether you understood it and whether you can now put it all into practice.
At the end of the day it will show in your work.

I had no formal training in design past high school, but I have self-taught myself. I've been an artistic since I was a child and have gone through more books than I can remember that have to do with colour theory, typography, layout, and even art history. I'm not taking offence to you comment at all, just wanted to point out that it's not always formal training that matter.

I agree a designer needs to learn the concepts you mentioned. But I think it's entirely possible to learn them on the designers own time as well as at a school.

I dont believe I ever mentioned that anyone should be 'formally' trained.

All I was saying was that people should 'study' design theories and gain an understanding of it all.

design theories are all well and good but if you haven't got an original idea for your site, whats the point in them?

The best sites I have seen come from a good idea and nothing more. You can study colour theory and typography until you're blue in the face but if you come up with 'just another flash site', whats the point?

agreed, but they both go hand in hand don't you think?

great ideas can also be ruined by bad design.

make a site that is based on a 'good idea' yet execute it poorly, and you end up with "just another flash site", that also looks crap.

dazza3 your post sounds a bit like a mandate that designers that meet your criteria rule the web.

just change the channel if you're fed up.

i like the equal-footing the web affords people. i would like to ban templates myself and sometimes find designy type sites as annoying as a novice blinkity garish thing.

studied? i learned on the job and have studied with varying degrees of enthusiasm my whole life.

I'm currently studying Design at University.

It's DEFINETELY helped my design in terms of effectiveness of communication. Design theories have been really helpful.

On-Site training still owns though. Not as structured as Uni, but learning just seemed more natural.

go to some of the university websites, run a search for architecture* [[edit]-insert discipline of your interest] department, and find out the textbook/reading material for the particular programme.

that should help you fill some gaps, but from my experience, they are mostly supplemental readings to the lectures...

A lot of profs [mine do] put up pdf files after every lecture, they could help you too.

then again, nothing replaces actually enrolling in a program.
