Come on FK, join the new millenium

Come on FK, join the new millennium.

Don't get me wrong. I love flashkit, the community and helpful moderators, just about everything except the servers.

If you tell me that FK does not make money on this site and the Flash Conference, I will call you a liar.

I understand that the majority of services on FK are free of charge, and you may say: Hey man its free, stop your b1tching, what do you want for free?

Well, without "us" the users, FK would be little more than a personal homepage with some flash tutorials and a message board.

How hard is it to add a new server or at least keep the ones that they have, running at peak performance? I know that it is not cheap to run multiple servers not mention bandwidth costs. But there has to be a solution on the horizon, someplace.

With the amount of product sales that FK generates for macromedia, erain,etc.., not to mention technical support and beta testing, you would think that they would offer some server space to help in the continuation of a very good thing for both companies.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that is fed up with the overall performance of Flashkit, slow loads, no loads. Every year the servers become more taxed, with added users, growing databases, more adds, etc., and although I know the FK team does their best to keep everything running well, their best is becoming not good enough.

Should we start donating money for upkeep? Any rich developers want to pitch in? Is there a sugardaddy or /momma in the house??

I would never consider leaving Flashkit, because I love it here..but maybe that's the problem. Why do they need to make things better when they have such a loyal member base?

Am I way off target? Just a jerk? Or do I speak for many.

Any insight, slams and discussion would be appreciated..

Thank you for letting me rant..

    As always..
    A loyal member

I believe our esteemed webmaster mentioned something about custom built IBM servers not too long ago, trouble is we have to wait for them to be custom built...Starks?

    Agenda:

    * To voice a concern of the ever advancing trend of the server(s) inability to process user requested pages.
    * Create a level of concern in order innitiate change.
    * blow off steam

    Change has to start someplace..
If you feel ill, you tell the docter where it hurts..Same thing goes with this community. If you never voice a concern or talk about problems, things are slow to change.

sorry if my post wasn't clear earlier - it was meant to be sarcastic but was not aimed at you. It's part of a inside-'joke' if i can call it that.

I personally agree with the points you've made but I dont have any answers.

Email the webmaster directly or keep checking this thread back for responses.

LOL..I wasnt sure there for a minute Aria.
I tried to word my original post in a way that would be concieved as "concerned" rather than "obnoxious and lame". I hope it has come across that way.

If I happen to win the lottery, I vow to donate a full server rack and enough funds for a years worth of bandwidth (at todays going rate)..LOL

We ordered a new server a few weeks ago.

IBM asked for 3 weeks to build it, but it appears they've had to push it back. All I can say is that it's supposedly due "any day now".

What type of estimated performance increase are we looking at?

The current machine is a dual 900MHz - or something close - with 1 gig and 10k rpm disks. The new machine is a dual 2.8 gig Xeon with 4 gigs of ram and 6 15k rpm disks.

Best guess I've heard is approx 3 times the power.

Ugh Okay here's a story to pass the time. While you wait for the new server.

Once apon a time (yes this story starts with once apon a time). There were two snails sitting on the back of a turtle. The one snail looks at the the other snail and says:
"Hang on Bob, heeeeeeere weeeee gooooo!!"

    Pretend your that snail!

Good news. The server is here. Byron set up the normal crap, so tomorrow I'll be helping him with the abnormal crap. As soon as the ram gets here, we can hopefully be up and running. I say that loosely, cuz we all know that plans are inherently broken.

We's working on it though. As soon as our skills match the task at hand the server will crash and we'll order another
