Lots of people argue about exactly when anime "began", but here's two good links - a short one and a longer one.

A pleasure. I'm still hoping more people will come in and post some links/anecdotes - I know Naldoman is pretty well-versed in anime past.

...Well, I've been to Disneyland twice, does that count?
Anime was already translated and on American TV when I was a kid:
Astro Boy (1963) --- the first anime on TV
Kimba the White Lion
Gigantor
Cyborg 009
All in glorious black and white. Still, it was quite a bit more exciting than Gumby or David and Goliath, and while not as funny, certainly more action-packed than Rocky and Bullwinkle.
I think most kids my age didn't realize anime was from Japan until we saw Speed Racer (1967). Maybe it was the outrageous dubbing. Maybe it was the fact that by then, I was in school and could read the credits that said Tatsunoko Studios, Japan!!! I visited Tatsunoko Studios in 1988, and it's a small place (like most animation shops), but they did have a display case in the main corridor with toys/models based on some of their shows. Of course, the Mach 5 was very prominently displayed, as well as the characters from Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets).
I guess all roads lead back to your childhood.
Why can't I buy Speed Racer Eps. on DVD?!?!?!?

lol! I used to watch that show when I was a kid all the time! They'd show reruns of the shows.... it was kinda odd seeing all this new technology TV stuff and then have a clay-based show come on, lol. (this was on Nickelodeon a long time ago.)
