blurry pixel fonts
i know - been asked about a million times...but i can't find quite the answer i'm looking for. if you have a dynamic textbox in another MC (or just nested in general, within as many MCs as one can imagine), does the placement of any of the containing MCs matter in aligning the textbox? I ask because i'm using a dynamic textbox for the number of a date in a calendar...i have a main swf that loads a Dates.swf. This swf has an MC that contains a scrollpane, whose content is an MC that holds dynamically generated MCs for every day of the month, which contains the textbox for the day number. the day number follows all the pixel fonts rules (left align, whole int coordinates, size multiple of 8), but they all still look blurry. I tried to make its parent MC have whole integers, the scrollpane have whole integers, and the parentMC of the scrollpane have whole integers, but none of that worked.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Well you've done your homework that's for sure
Do you have any objects in your mc's that are aligned off
Do you have any kerning going on?
mc's in mc's have a tendency to shift a bit.
try offsetting the inner most one by .05

excellent! frets, offsetting the 1st parent mcs worked like a charm... thank you so much, i never would have thought to mess with that. though i did find that it looked better changing the size to 9 instead of it being at 8, even though it said it was designed for 8 or multiples of. any reason that may be? oh well, either way, it works and look wonderful - thanks again!!

What pixelfont exactly are you using.
The only 100% fully working ones are those from miniml and the 04b series.
All rest have tendencies to degenerate or display fuzzy characters.

actually, sense, i personally didn't have good results with the 04b series. i had just tried it as a title, not nested in anything else, with all the basic rules applied, and it was acting weird - the middle of the o's were all blurry and kind of filled in, in a way. anyway, i was using one of the free ones from fff...and with the tip that was given to me, it seems to all work just fine. not blurry at all. thanks, though...

You don't need to shift the position a little to get good results, just follow the guidelines. Take a special look at the part of this tutorial that deals with movie clips:

fff,
thanks for the link - that was helpful, and i'll keep that on hand. but, when i was trying it on my own, i pretty much went through all those steps - all my nested mcs were on whole ints, the text was at 8, wasn't bold or italic, it was aligned left, i wasn't publishing in %, and there were no other elements in the mc with the textbox. There actually were initially dynamically displayed elements that were placed in the mc, but i removed them for testing purposes. The only thing that worked was shifting the parent mc by .05 as suggested above. also, once i did that, it wasn't really blurry, but i accidentally changed the size to 9, and it even looked a little crisper. now, i don't really care that the basic guidelines didn't work, since it works just fine now, but any idea why this would be happening? especially changing it to 9? the pixel fonts i worked with in the past have always shown a severe decrease in quality when using a non-multiple of 8. hmmm...interesting. thoughts?

There might be a number of reasons why this is not working. Trying at 9 pixels may work in some conditions, however, this is coincidental. There is an explanation for everything.
If you'd like, you can grab some of our freebies and send me a test with those fonts. (small FLA file please, not a whole project).
Hope this helps!

how do i set my placement by 2 decimal places (.05)? i can only modify my placement by 1 decimal place. i am using flash 5. thanks.

Well, I was attaching and aligning the MCs programatically...you would need to make the placement using Actionscript to nudge it by .05
somewhere in your AS code, whether on the main timeline, or on (or in) your MC or textfield, just reference whatever you're trying to move and set the y or y directly (object._x = 10.05), or just move it from its current location by saying object._x = object._x+.05
