The speed of sound
This is textbook knowledge.
In Television Production, we (engineers and technicians) were taught that the speed of sound varies dependent upon quite a few factors like the sound's tone, the atmosphere (hot vs. warm vs. cold), air vs. water and other factors. We were taught that the speed of sound is NOT constant. I know I'm going to have some angry responses about this. I may not know Flash, but I DO know what got me Bachelor degrees in Arts and Sciences.

you can eat this : In the Airforce i was "taught" that the speed of sound is 1125 on a normal day , this depends on the weather, temp and hight.

Speed of sound - the facts:
The speed of sound is dependant on atmospheric conditions:
If it is hot, sound will travel at about 80mph.
In the cold it can slow down to below 1 mile an hour - it has been known for Eskimo conversations to take weeks - simply because of the time taken for words to travel between them.
The louder the sound, the faster it travels - If you were to put a loud elephant next to a tiny little quiet mouse - you would here the elephant first - even if they made a noise at the same time.
The speed that a sound travels is relative to the object that makes the sound. Therefore if you run backwards really fast (about 80mph on a hot day) and shout, the sound will actually remain stationary - a cloud of sound if you like.
As energy does have a kind of mass and sound is energy, if you shout directly up into the air, it will eventually come back down.
Hope that settles it once and for all.

what if you were on a concorde travelling at m2 (or whatever)- if you were to shout something then run down the aisle, what would happen?
i have just totally confused myself thinking about that.

the concorde is pressurized. So the air is static, not flying by you at 2000 miles per hour, like the air outside the concorde.
Sounds is not a particle, but the manipulation of particles of a medium.

Dependant on your physique and health level, you'd probably start breathing hard and feel embarrassed as everyone stares at you.
The air behind you is going as fast as the air in front of you as fast as your going as fast as the plane is going. It's all relative; as far as visual/audible physics is concerned nothing has changed and it's the same as you standing in a classroom and yelling.

i agree - someone was saying earlier that the speed of sound is only 80 MPH....i don't think so! there would be a lot of sonic booms on the interstate from everyone's cars if that were the case....
