how to stop jagged fuzzy images?

    Please help...
I like to use large images in Flash. (maybe 500px by 200px)
Everytime I do they look very fuzzy abd jagged. I have tried jpeg, (which seems the best), png, gig and even bringing them into Illustrator and saving them as SWF files in flash. (seems to be the worst)
I want clear clean images but it never happens.
    help!
    Thanks Anthony

when u export to .swf what settings do u use on the pop up screen

it called jpeg quality (white box next to it with numbers in it) the default on mine is 50, u can change the numbers...

i tend to export on 80 for most things, note the higher the jpeg number the better the quality and the bigger the file created

    hope this solves it

also import into flash as a jpeg or png at 100% quality let flash compress the image dont import a 50% qualty jpeg and then export at 50% from flash, or it will look pants

I optimise them heavily in Fireworks and then again in Flash - the quality is still sweet and I'm totally in love with Fireworks' export settings, color matching and optimisation capability . Total seamless integration with Flash MX not to mention how well it deals with vectors.

I have been thinking about writing a tutorial on this process - I'll try and get something together this week.

i agree with u about fireworks, it is much better at getting the size down on files when compared to phsp

what export settings do u use as a rule ?

    hey aria,

what exactly do u mean by optimize? does that mean pulling the slider of the jpeg quality over to 100%?

sounds like a metal question to ask but yea im curious

    you mean within Flash?

I optimise using the Bitmap properties panel (Library> Bitmap Properties) and depending on the imported image I go for Jpeg compression or png/gif. The JPEG compression defaults to 50 but you can take it down more and test it at the same time to see if the quality loss is acceptable or not.

Usually if working with gifs, I go for an 'adaptive' palette or if it's pngs I take it down to PNG8 to see how and if it can handle that.

Then I take it down to 64 colors and start removing colors manually, also if i want to match my Flash movie's bg I select a 'no transparency' setting and match the matte using the same rgb values .

I am getting a tutorial together this week and will post the link here when its done
