worried that someone's registered a v.similar domain to my site :(

I'm very annoyed with myself tonight

My domain is www.nitrovortex.com, and as I'm based in the UK and for a long time I've been toying around with the idea of purchasing "nitrovortex.co.uk" and have it link to my site, but being a total idiot I've never got round to doing it.

Finally decided to buy it, just checked the availability thinking it would be just a formality and to my horror some rotten bugger has already registered it

They only registered it about 6 weeks ago and theres nothing up for it....yet. But I'm worried something nasty will appear on this site thats so closely named to my own.

Am I being paranoid? please someone tell me everythings gonna be ok

everything should be okay... if you really need it, I'd email them; maybe they'll let it go for like $50 or something...

I'm still annoyed with myself though, I had all that time to register it and I never did it

Why would somebody register that name though? to most people that domain would be useless, I'm aware my domain name is a little odd and does sound like some household cleaning product.

They've taken their details off the whois database too, all i got is the blokes name.

I mean is there some legal side to this? cos if I registered say "BurgerKing.co.uk" would I not be breaking the law? same way this guys's registered "nitrovortex.co.uk" knowing full well theres a .com with that name established.

    bloody cyber squatters

Dont have an email though, all i got is his name

maybe i should wait and see what goes up on the site, but i've heard stories about people putting porn on their sites and blackmailing peole to buy the domain off them.

Could be wrong, but i think that happened with Marks & Spencer

I bought it, you can have it for £1,500,000 GBP

or for a years free membership to 'Chunky's, the Taiwanese grass bowls club'

On a serious note I'd try and have a word with the ISP if you can't get in contact with the guy himself about the domain and that you're after it.
    Keep it rural.

yes, but it would be harder to proof then something like a bloke registering the porn.kids domain... and even that is pretty hard to proof (thatit's breaking the law)

that and that international law is a pain.

you can't compare between BurgerKing.co.uk and nitrovortex.co.uk -- BK has these legal copyright terms. Is nitrovortex copyrighted to you? If so you should be able to get it off the guy "the nitrovortex is copyrighted to me and as such you would be breaking the law" blah blah.

But if you don't hold copyright legal process over the nitrovortex then I wish you best of luck.

Of course I am not a lawyer but at least that is what some IT papers say/recommend if I recall correctly.

As above... search the forums, I posted something similar about this a while ago and Aversion posted some great links to an arbitration service, that allows anyone to challenge ownership of a domain.

If you want to email him, try anything@nitrovortex.co.uk As they should all forward to his account

Cheers, i'll do that..search for that thread.

I'm caught in 2 minds now:

1, wanna contact this bloke and be polite see if he's willing to receive an offer for the domain before he actually gets a site up and running on it.

2, play it cool and just see what happens, if rush in there all "I WANT THAT DOMAIN" he'll smell blood, know I want it bad and ask the earth for it.

    ooooooooooh what to do

Just send an email from a no descript account...

Asking if he'd like to sell the domain for £10. Nothing more nothing less. Don't say that you want to use it for a business or what ever.

If he comes back asking more, plead poverty Tell him you are a poor student etc...

The person that registered it could and probably is a flashkit member, so no doubt they are already reading this...
