t he merchant bankers thread
I am working on a project at the moment where I need to take payments so I thought I'd do a little research into ones that have been mentioned here in the past.
here goes:
paypal - http://www.paypal.com
------------------------------
Apparently, this lets you send money to anyone with an email address. The first thing that struck me though was the fact that you have to register a paypal account to send money. My customers will be very varied and may only use the service once. They'll already be registering with me so I do not want them to register again.
international charges vary but (2.2% of transaction + $0.30)
Paysystems - http://www.paysystems.com/
---------------------------------------
hmm, a lot to offer

money ?
One time set-up fee $49.00
Type A Discount Rate and Per Transaction Fee 3.95%* and $1.00*
Type B Discount Rate and Per Transaction Fee 5.5%* and $0.45*
Rolling reserve (for period of 6 months) 5.00%
Instabill - http://www.instabill.com/
-------------------------------------
ATTENTION - we are not accepting new merchants at the moment.
fair enough then
ccNow - http://www.ccnow.com
----------------------------
Customers do not have to register, they simply fill in their credit card details. This ones US based so my UK site would have to pay a little extra. They claim they offer a full online merchant solution. Theres an online demo (http://www.amylove.com/) which shows you how it works. The downside ? Like a lot of other merchant banks, they transfer you to their own pages, this makes the site look inconsistent.
pretty pricey too - 11% of your total sales in excess of $100.00
iBill - http://www.ibill.com
----------------------------
Straight away, the first thing I notice is that iBill provides an online wizard to let you choose the option best for you. Apparently, the best for me is iBill Hardcoding for a subscription or service. Theres an online demo here too but once more, the poor looking iBill checkout page puts me right off.
cash ?
$0-$9,999 15% 15.0%
$10,000-$24,999 14% 13.5%
$25,000-$49,999 13% 12.5%
$50,000-$99,999 12% 11.5%
Internet Secure - http://www.internetsecure.com/
------------------------------------------------
claim to be fast (20-30 seconds) but once more goes to an awful looking page on their server. Why can't these companies offer you a designed page that is consistent with your look and feel.
don't give me a price but I have requested one from their request a price page.
Web Merchant - http://www.web-merchant.co.uk/
---------------------------------------------
web merchant works slightly differently than others mentioned above. Basically, it acts as a merchant banker for you. Your customers cash will be held by them for 28 days (to give them chance to complain) before it is forwarded to you. As opposed to the plug and play shopping carts outlined above, this service literally sets you up as a merchant banker, you process orders through them.
Web-Merchant was developed to cut through the usual 'red tape' and bureaucratic procedures and make it easy to obtain Merchant Status.
How do we do this? ... a major UK Bank provides the Merchant ID and we use the latest E-Payment technology to link your web site to the credit card networks via a bank approved Internet Payment Gateway.
1/ Web-Merchant Account Only
Once only set-up charge £75.00 (plus VAT)
Annual charge £150.00 (plus VAT)
2/ Optional PC Payment Terminal
Once only set-up charge £50.00 (plus VAT)
3/ Optional Repeat Billing Facility 'FuturePay'
Once only set-up charge £100.00 (plus VAT)
Go e Merchant - http://www.goemerchant.com/ (Scott Mannings evil nemesis)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
$59.95 a month so pretty expensive.
Seems very straightforward and quite powerful. The main thing is, its very pricey for a service which will make nothing for the first few months.
Card Service - http://www.cardservice.com/
------------------------------------------
again, like web merchant, they don't offer a bespoke catalogue type of service as such, instead they literally set you up as a merchant. no prices though so got bored of the site. I have seen it advertised quite a lot though, anyone else have an opinion of it ?
eclear - http://www.eclear.net/
-------------------------------
You have to be registered as a merchant to use eclear and they offer you help to do it. You can then take crdeit cards for as little as £9.99 per month and 1% of transactions. Pretty cheap and UK based, I'll be looking further into this one.
£9.99 per month and 1%
WorldPay - http://www.worldpay.com
----------------------------------
They claim to be the biggest and there are a lot of success stories. Again, a merchant account is needed and boy do they charge.
Set up fee of £75.00 and first annual fee of £150.00 for WorldDirect (excluding VAT).
£24.00 Set Up Fee for WorldAccess - a saving of over 50%.
£100.00 for Click and Build for 12 months - a saving of over 60%
WorldPay take a 4.50% Transaction Service Charge (TSC) on credit card transactions and £0.50 for debit cards (including all bank charges).
WorldAlert (including WorldAlert Configurator), which is packaged with WorldDirect, is charged at £0.06 per transaction.

if you are willing to use 3rd Party Merchants like PayPal ., then I suggest you also take a look at www.2checkout.com . they have a good reputation and I am personally planning to use them . Since I am in India , and can not have a US based Bank account or UK ( for that matter) , I am restricted to using CardService , or Authorize.net or modernbill or Charge.com etc. And i have heard of good recomendatiosn for 2checkout . I was earler a customer of HostCharge and as you may have heard they were one of the biggest Scam Artists cozing huge losses to bery many WebHosts ... stay clear of them or Acenet Corp. etc .
