Total site weight w/ bmps.

Hi,
I was wondering which is best for total weight of website.
I have some thumbnail images (jpeg) loading dynamicaly. When the user clicks on them, you guessed it. A larger picture becomes available.
Do I Use one large image for the thumbnail and the 'feature' and use action script to resize it or do I use one large image for the feature & another, sampled down for the thumbnail?
