    lordoftherings.net

    i'm sure the tolkien fans have already stumbled across this one, but just in case, this is the official website of the Lord of the Rings.

    what i'd like to know is: if you F5 (refresh the page), the header picture is different. how did they do that???

    thx in advance.

    it's actually scalable, which seems a little crazy considering it's almost entirely bitmaps.

    as for the random header pic...there's more than one way to skin that cat and all of them are pretty easy...maybe someone can throw some code in here for you.

    well either you can randomly load the image into a mc or level or you can randomly select an frame togoto.

    bgs = ##number of images available;
    loadMovie(("##first part of the file name"+Math.ceil(Math.random()*bgs))+".swf", "##where to load it");

    EXAMPLE CODE
    bgs = 7;
    loadMovie(("splash"+Math.ceil(Math.random()*bgs))+ ".swf", "bg");

    this will return a result of loading "splash(rand number between 0-7).swf into an MC named 'bg'
    Nothing to see here, move along.

    dor a 300,000,000 dollar film (am i way off?), i think they could have spent a few extra thousand dollars for a cool webpage. Honestly, i think it sucks! it just doesn't look nice, the navigation is "old school" - crappy, and... it just doesn't feel professional.

    yes, the .com is a la ninjai, although i like ninjai's a bit more.

    & kk, i get that a few of you aren't impressed with the layout... just wondering, though, if i could get more feedback in terms of how they did the random pictures...

    thx.

    i don't see what the big problems are with this site . just becuz its "old school" and not crazy with the animations shouldn't mean its bad. it works to get someone around the site, and the bitmap layouts are pretty nice.

    and dare I say that its pretty cool becuz it has CONTENT, unlike many of the portfolio sites that are posted here. The ninjai site i would say is even more old school than lotr, but is totally cool cuz of the wicked content.

    one thing to fix is that buggy/jerky rollover things on the bottom of the main screens.

    But I would say this site is much cooler than most - because unlike being wowed by some flashy animation/scripting and then closing my window after 2 minutes since there's not much else to see, I could definitely romp around this site for a while. and i thought that was the point of good design...

    this site is such a wasted opportunity, with the amount of money they musta had and the wealth of images available you'd think they'd make a much better job of it

    Great films, quite annoying website. There is nothing I hate more than sites that scale 100% their flash. Also it would be good to add a forum and few other things on that site. Other than that it is an okay resource. Not as good as www.lordoftherings.com or www.theonering.net
