    i think im quite close to getting it. using this php script:
    <<?php
    header ("Cache-Control: must-revalidate, post-check=0, pre-check=0");
    header ("Content-Type: application/octet-stream");
    header ("Content-Length: " . filesize($theFile));
    header ("Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=$theFileName");
    readfile($theFile);
    ?>

    and using geturl("download.php?theFileName=filename");
    only problem is, i can only force download of files in the same folder as my swf or html! how do i tell wot path it is? if i juz include the path in filename, it downloads the php file not the file i want, OR it downloads a 0 byte file with the name of wot i want!! i think now this is actually quite not a flash problem but pure html/php thing....
