    Masking question

Can someone explain how to mask something to me?

I have a background drawn on a layer, and I draw a mask so that the background is supposed to show through that mask, but every time I do it, the mask just blocks everything there instead of the other way around...... what am I doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance.

    Yup, that's pretty spiffy.

Really I'm just looking for even simpler than that.....when I do animations and such, I'd like to have nice rounded rectangle edges, and the drawings go over the edges/borders sometimes and I'd like to just mask, for the cleanup effect.

Just not sure why my masks end up covering up the stuff I'm trying to mask.... do I have to make the mask transparent or something? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the mask?

I just figured out what I was doing wrong.

To properly mask, I guess you have to create a layer ABOVE the layer you just drew on, and then make that NEW layer the mask, and draw the mask there.

I was trying to mask the layer I'd drawn, using the logic that that was the layer I wanted to mask.....ugh.

Here's kind of what I was going for, hastily drawn but you see the general idea....

Thanks for your help! Looking at yours got me a bit closer to what I was wanting to do.

I got intrigued by masks awhile back and built a movie with 7 or 8 of them in it. I've just scratched the surface. Check this out.
