Multilingual Website in Flash and HTML
Hi,
I want to build a static website in English and Spanish, how can I do this, running Windows Xp as my Operating System. Or is there any other way to build a site for two languages?
Thanks a lot,
John

Hi,
You have to make two separate websites with a common index page.

John,
You can type in Spanish text to make buttons or build text content by creating a copy of your .fla files and entering Spanish text there. This may be quite time consuming and can create maintenance problems.
Alternatively, you can use a software product allowing you to create Spanish translations of .swf files. Our product Tramigo is an example of such software. Visit this page http://avral.com/tramigo/ for more information.
Your users should not need to install anything, because the Spanish language uses the Western European character set and you should be OK as far as fonts are concerned.
If you have any questions let me know.
Cheers,
Andrei

Avral,
Can you please explain how your product handles language expansion? For example Portuguese is about 33% longer than English. How do you handle the extra text without destroying the layout of your site.

Tw4win,
At this time, language expansion is a design issue that has to be dealt with in the Flash authoring environment. In many cases it is possible to use a "one size fits all" approach. This means that the source .swf is designed so that text will fit after translation into any of the target languages. We are working now to find a better solution. Any thoughts? Feel free to email us off-list.

I'm a localization engineer and I think your product is pretty good, aside from the expansion issue. I see it being used to input edits into a published flash file once most of the localization is complete.
