I'm not sure of all the purposes, but I know Google uses them to go through links on pages, to help index how popular a site is in certain areas, and that helps make it closer to first on its searches, etc. Otherwise, though, I have no idea.

They do
Web spiders basicly crawl sites for e-mail addresses and then signs the addresses up for spam. Look at TheEnigma's footer to see what I mean.
