*Not related to games, but since I grew up in the games forum plz dont movve it.*
Did you guys hear of the StarWars kid? If not, its the story of some overweight kid from Quebec who makes a homevideo of himself doing starwars moves. Somehow, his friends got hold of the tape and posted it all over the net. This kid was ridiculed all over the world on thousands of websites. Statistics show that it was downloaded around 1.1 million times.
Now here is the cool part. A group of mac graphic designers saw the video on the net and wanted to help the kid because he was getting laughed at. So they took the video, and put an intro(starwars), sound, and the coolest....a real lightsaber. So the new video looks pretty cool and the guy should be quite happy to see him with a lightsaber. The graphic artist group then raised 5000$ for him and gave him an iPod. Now the kid is famous for being "Star wars kid". Hes going on late night shows and everything. So a note to all peopl e wanting cash and an iPod: Make a video of yourself with a golf ball retriever, pretending you are Darth Maul.
Heres the link to the videos( Check out The unedited first, then the edited):
Ok, I'm not a Star Wars fan but my friends are. I made a little "test" clip of myself 4 years ago just to see if I could do the lightsaber effect. I recorded myself in a friends living room.
NO ONE, except for some of my friends, has seen this. When I read this post about that poor kid, I dug out MY own little clip . Well, I'm not as geeky as him .
As I'm not a starwars fan, I accidently made the lightsaber too thick.
I have made a 15 minutes fighting video with some of my martial art pals. It includes awesome sound effects and ninja and karate costumes (REAL ninja/karate costumes). Kinda like an old chinese fighting movie. Everyone who has seen it thinks it rules.. So do I.. no geekyness, only professionls. But that one I'm not showing.
yeah, now that i have MX, im buying a large green sheet and making a green wall so i can do effects. With my digital camera, im gonna make a movie A la Matrix.
DId you make your thing in Flash? Cause if you did, tell me how you did the light saber. ITS F****** AWESOME!
You can do it in Flash MX of course. But I used Adobe Premiere and Photoshop as I didn't have any other programs back then.
To many things involved to do it.... Don't know the name of the different functions in the programs to use and I don't have any of them installed as I'm bored with effects....
1. Record yourself holding a stick or whatever you want.
2. Import the recorded file into Adobe Premiere
3. Export as pictures (every frame becomes a picture)
4. Import all the pictures into Adobe Photoshop
5. Draw a white (any colour you want, just make sure the colour you choose isn't on the picture) line over the stick. Do this on ALL the pictures
6. Tell Photoshop that everything that is "your colour" on the picture to turn into a glowy effect.......
You can do the same thing in Adobe After effects. Basically, I think it would be pretty much the same process as Ironclaw explained. But After Effects is sorta like Flash mixed with Photoshop. So you could take that glow and tween it so it'll make your movement so you don't have to draw every frame. I'm sure you could find an exact procedure if you look it up.
Yepp, could be done in Flash aswell... but not at the same quality as Flash can't export with perfect quality... I have tried... Imported a clip with 100% quality and exported it with 100% quality... but the quality lowered...
Arrgh!! I do CG work and After Effects sucks compared to the great Combustion. Combustion and Maya were used to make Hollow Man.
Also, check out Duality (www.crewoftwo.com). Duality was made with Final Cut Pro, Commotion, After Effects, Universe, and Photoshop. Duality was made on Macs running Mac OSX, the world's best OS.
After Effects is for 3D compositing, rotoscoping and effects. Commotion is for mattes, and motion painting. Boris RED is for effects titling, and rotoscoping. Combustion does everything. But one of the best compositing, special effects, rotoscoping, painting, and matte software is Shake
. Shake was used to make the LOTR movies.

I hope you aren't saying FLash is good for easy lighsaber effects. Commotion would be best for easy lightsaber effects. Download a demo from Pinnacle Systems's website and see for yourself. Flash isn't for stuff like this. Now, my mind could be changed if someone here made something as good as Duality in Flash only. That's an impossibility though.
This is just a demo, though. if you know how to use Photshop, this will be easy to learn. (BTW, if you use a Mac, you have access to tools such as Final Cut Pro or iMovie. iMovie is the FREE video editing program included with every Mac. iMovie's very powerful. it even does blue-screening!)
