How many hours to create???

How many hours would it take a average developer to create a site like:

www.podchannel.com

I work for this small company and found a developer who charged $2000.00 for this site along the HTML version. I've gotten conflicting reports as to whether this was a decent price or not. I have to have another site built and want to know if I should hire the same guy again.
Can someone tell me if this was a decent price for this site?

In my opinion the developer took your company for a ride. The overall design is poor, and the flash site takes ages to download (just might be my connection). There is places where Flash is used when it shouldnt have been.

I'm not based in the US so its hard for me to give you an accurate quote, but this is a straight forward site that isnt worth $2k in my opinion.

My advise would be to have a very good look at someones portfolio before hiring them.

I think if the design was better then it might be worth that but since it's pretty poor I'd say it's not quite £1500 worth. Still, kudos to the designer getting the money!

I agree with the above post. He probably spent $2000 worth of time to develop the site, so from that standpoint, I don't think you got taken.

From a design standpoint, if I were the client, I wouldn't be happy. The Flash does take way too long to load (I'm on a T3 here). He used jpeg text on the HTML site, so updating content will be difficult. Overall, the site looks like it was done by an amateur.

Just curious, did he show you a design mockup first and allow you to request changes? Or did he just pop up with this and say, "This is your site." ?

Unreal! Now that's an ingenious way to make a quick $2000! Buy a template, populate it with the client's info, change a pic or two and then, WHAMMO! About 2 or 3 hours of work and a pocketfull of cash!
Gotta hand it to the guy, though... pretty clever! in a weird sort of way.

this is like the extreme, but how is this "being taken" again? the purchaser bought a working website, he was delivered that.

I would say that the answer comes from whether the costumer feels they got what they paid for. Sure you could have paid less, or you could have paid more. But at the end of the day, did you get what you wanted? was it what you expected? If you feel you paid to much, and not happy with the work, I suggest finding someone else, doing research, asking "around". And decide how much you are willing to spend, and what you expect to get for the price. I believe now, theirs a wide range of 'price groups' for WebSites.

I was offered a job a few months ago by a friend, but the pay was pretty low, 750 euros, especially for what the client was asking for. He ended up paying 500 euros and got a really piss poor site that he's embarrassed to give out the URL. So you get what you pay for, and you have to becareful who you hire.

I suppose "taken" may be too strong, but I feel that the client was deceived. First, from the original post, I am assuming that the client didn't know he was getting a template site.

Selling a template site (and marking it up) is fine, so long as the client knows that what he's getting is not necessarily unique. He may even pay the $2000 and be happy.

If, however, you represented yourself as designing a unique and custom site for the client and then used a template... well, I guess that's where I draw the line.
