    Questions about Video in Flash

I'm hoping to start using Flash to display video over an intranet. I have a few questions.

    1. Can I overlay movie clips on top of a video clip?
    2. Can I load an external movie in mpg or avi, or would it have to be contained in a Flash movie clip first?
    3. Can I display streamed video in Flash?

    Yes, just try it.

    Nop, only swf.
    3. Can I display streamed video in Flash?

video is just another timeline based format within Flash. You can place it in a layer and have other graphics in higher layers overlapping the video, or layer movie clips on the stage. Though it seems people recommend being careful about this to avoid to much CPU usage.

Flash cannot natively play mpeg or avi. Flash can only play its own video format. Flash MX video content can exist within a SWF or in its own FLV format which requires the Flash Communication Server for streaming or download.

    3. Can I display streamed video in Flash?

Flash can either download or progressively download video inside SWF. This is just like other Flash media in that it loads and plays on a frame by frame basis.

Apparently, if you use the Flash Communication Server you acheive true streaming with the FLV format through the rtsp protocol.
