stupid p-shop question - mask brush?

I'm trying to mask out a section of a picture and can't find the tool that allows me to basically paint the mask on using a brush (as you can in Flash). all i can find is lassos, rectangles, and circles.

    i hate photoshop

Just click the Add Layer Mask button on the bottom of the Layers palette and use a normal paint brush to mask out what you dont want. You should be able to find step by step instructions in your users manual under "Masks"...

if you want a rectangular mask i advice you to use the polygon tool or the shapes tool but not the paintbrush. in the layers panel you will see a circular icon click on that and it will add a mask to the layer you have selected.
