    you should take a look at xara, it's a vector app aimed purely at web dev, none of the print functions of apps like illustrator but all of their vector features. It's simple to use and far more 'efficient' than illustrator, exports straight to SWF nicely.

    I can give you a basic run through.

    1) maximal spelling errors and abbreviations are necessary, although it has to be readable.
    2) a title that brings excitement or something unique is always needed to draw in the audience. E.g. OMG!!! YOU GUYS GOTTA CHECK THIS OUT!!!
    3) then you must rant on about how good it is before finally dropping the URL.

    Hope it helped.

    Whenever I open up illustrator I usually end up staring at the screen for 10 minutes before shutting the program down.

    http://www.gyve.org/ was closed in 2002 and links to SodiPodi. SodiPodi is OK but it doesn't read or write EPS files- Writes SVG.

    In the KDE developement Karbon 14 (Killustrator/Kontour) doesn't have the same feature set as Illustrator, although it is much much easier to use and produces EPS. Its part of KOffice so I would be shocked if you saw it ported to Windows.

    Over in the Gnome world Sketch http://sketch.sourceforge.net/index.html and SodiPodi both are part of Gnome Office (And there is a project to port the Gnome environment to Windows hence we have Dia and SodiPodi for Windows) I wouldn't doubt that Sketch wouldn't get ported also. Sketch is the Karbon 14 like app for Gnome Office (Produces EPS), although its much easier to use than Karbon 14 but has less features- Agian not exactly Illustrator.

    Honestly though if you want something not as hard to learn as Illustrator and cheap then Corel Essentials (79.99) has Corel Draw 9 and PhotoPaint 9 together in one package.

    Corel (They got bought out by vector) also has unbundled RAVE 2 and can be bought for 39.99 now also.

    They are porting KOffice to MAC so you would have Karbon 14

    Actually check out Fink http://fink.sourceforge.net/

    Koffice Apps (Look for Kountor)
    http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/section.php/kde

    They have ported Kountor which is soon to be replaced by Karbon 14 so there is your MAC stuff.

    Likewise;

    SodiPodi http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/package.php/sodipodi
