If your dial up connection keeps dropping out - I might have the answer.
My 56k connection was driving me mad and costing a small fortune dropping out continually. No-one at the phone co. could help. Till one day I spoke to a lovely elderly lady there and she told me : "Oh luv the phone lines can't handle 56k, it's a rip off, what you need to do is connect at a lower setting like V.34" !
It worked and I've never dropped out again, it's also worked for many friends of mine. Here's how to change your settings on a Mac with sys 9.2 or less...
Go to the modem control panel and change your settings from V.90 to V.34.
Done and you'll hardly notice any difference in speed. It will work with external modems as well, use the same brand at a lower setting. Note: make a note of the settings first before you change them in case it doesn't work.
