Salary - don't know what is fair?

    Hi All,

There is someone who whats to hire me (possibly) and I do not know what salary to ask for. My job responsibilities would be about 80% Flash MX development and 20% DHTML. I will live and work in New Jersey (USA). I have about 2 years Web Development experience and 13 years as a computer programmer (C++/MFC). I am sooooooooo confused!

    Thanks for your input.

i would think at the very least, $25000 a year, probably a lot more. My experience is in the UK and i guess the salary would be more in the states

eek...that's pretty depressing. I remember my first programming job - I did COBOL back in 1990 and started at 25k lol.

i don't think you gave us nearly enough to go on here...

let's just break down a few of the questions that we'd need answers to before we could throw out numbers:

    the job:
will you be managing people? direct reports?
will you interact with the client?
will you be responsible for content production? new business ops?
    will you have full benefits?
    will you have performance incentives?
will you have employee ownership, profit-sharing or other incentives?
    will you have education benefits?
will you have commuting benefits? telecommuting opportunities?
    will you have travel/exhibition opportunities?
is it a small shop or a huge tech consulting firm?
is the company well known for paying its employees well?

okay, there's a handful, now let's think about the info we'd need about you.

do you have a 4 year degree from an accredited college/uni?
    do you hold any certifications?
do you have any specialized training?
    are you published?
have you worked at major software development firms or just worked for your own freelance shop?
what is the average cost of contracts you've worked on? 5 grand or 50 million dollar projects???

as you can see there are a lot of unknowns. you could easily make 35 grand a year, you could also easily make 85 grand a year.

    you tell us.

    Try

    Visit www.salary.com

You can see similiar job titles and search them by skill level- then get a breakdown of low/median/high salary comparison by zip code.

It's useful for getting a ballpark range and can also be very useful to print out and take for face to face negotiations.

in the UK, without corporate experience, you can expect to earn anything from 12 - 18k per annum.

    with experience, anything from 18 - 30k
