Major Power Outage in Northwest USA

There seems to be breaking news.
As of around 4PM August 14, there seems
to be a large power outage throughout
the whole northeast of the United States.

Power Outages Reported Along East Coast; North to Toronto, South to Maryland and West to Cleveland and Detroit (4:32 PM ET)
    (New York Times)

So where are the ones in the North west located?

...I live in Maryland; I hope I don't have to reset my alarm clock again.

Dunno. If it didn't happen to you already,
    it probably won't happen.
It was a region-wide thing that happened
in just a short period of time.

Our area (washington dc) probably isn't affected.

Imagine this: you're in a subway in New York. No, hold on, it gets worse.

    The train stops.

    The lights go out.

    ...

    from NY TIMES
Radio reports said that subways were not operating in New York.

No reports of looting yet? I'm always tempted when in a store when the power goes out...

Hehehe... Oops, how did this Palm Pilot get into my pocket?

The officials said the outage is a natural occurrence
Um, it's a power outage? How is that natural?

    I noticed that too.

    Just like flowers in spring-time.

I also hate that, whenever anything out of the ordinary happens, they need to mention that it's
    not related to terrorism

If the terrorists wanted to take down the grid, they would do it during mid day, and they definatly wouldn't wait until after the markets had closed to do it.

Virgo: Apparently out grids just naturally fail...kinda like the how the seasons change

Feel sorry for all those stranded on the freeways, they are going to have a long night. At least I still have power.

Because power in the USA is seperated into different areas one area can go down quite easily. Other places in the world, like Europe, have a national grid system, where if one plant goes down, power can be taken from other places.

Surely you all remember the power problems in California a while back?

the grid went down, not a plant. our grid is similar to your grid. this is the third time this grid has gown down, once in 65, 77, and now 03.
