What is the best way to do this?

Basically we want the customer to be able to create their own designs by selecting from several lists of components on the left portion of the screen. As the customer selects a component the site will deliver a new image of the system the customer added a part to as well as add the cost to a column on the right side of the page as well as add specs to the bottom of the page. The page would have to be printable and the customer should have the ability to save their designs in a “my systems” database so they can pull them up later.

So u want to dynamically create Flash pages?

Don't know if that can be done very easily, or efficiently.

Yea, not impossible but hard to pull off and Flash
won't do it all alone. Especially the saving.

the easiest way (at least for me) use xml. I use that for dynamic content

(for example: i want the user to create his own menu) you create an xml file like this:

    < menu >
    < item name="item1" link="http://somelink.com" />
    < item name="item2" link="http://somelink2.com" />
    < item name="item3" link="http://somelink3.com" />
    < /menu >

so you got three nodes, each one should be a button.

You load the xml in flash and with a script that process the xml you attach (or ducplicate) a button for each node of the xml file, with the data it needs: name and link

For more comples things, it's longer to do it, but it uses the same principle

Wtf? I just found out MX will do this... 'kookies'
You *can* save and load to/from a user's machine with it.
You might could pull something off with it.
