.fla is a closed format made only by Macromedia Flash.

Yes there is a free / open-source editor for .SWF / Flash files, using Linux:

"Flash for Linux is an SWF editor, similar to Macromedia Flash."
It is covered under the GPL (GNU Public License)

Read about "Flash 4 Linux", here: http://freshmeat.net/projects/f4l/

    Here is the project's homepage:
    Flash 4 Linux homepage: http://f4l.sf.net/
Current version as of my writing now, seems to stand at v0.21

Contact the Author of "Flash 4 Linux" project, here:
"mascix" [project developer]: designofgod [at] yahoo [dot] com

Click HERE so you can download a tarball (that you may have to compile)

And here, from the comments section on that freshmeat page, is another helpful bit of comments for your info:

---- now for another reference or resource, something called "QFlash" ----

For one thing: Qflash doesn't allow me to edit .swf files OR .fla. Secondly, there's no program to run for that Flash for Linux project and no documentation on it either. I need help on getting both (either or) to work. If I don't receive help, I'll withhold myself from flaming =P

use wine for older flash applications at least Flash MX should work with that.

    other options are:
    - Flex3 (now opensource)- not sure but there should be a linux fork as well
    - Eclipse using the free AS3 compiler - but search on the AS3 forums for that

Thanks. I downloaded a workable version of Wine but the first two options didn't work. I'm trying the third one now (downloading it) but I'm a little skeptical. Are you certain wine can emulate anything other than paint and notepad? Cause every time I tried to use a program (even a simple game I downloaded) Wine would complain.

Any other programs out there that could possibly work? I just need some that can edit .fla files (as I've heard above there are free editors for such things).

    well find out yourself:

otherwise check crossoffice or the whatever the commercial version on wine is called - perhaps it can emulate it better.
But perhaps a solution like a VM is better since Flash is from ground up developed for Windows (and macintosh). And all those shareware or other packages that can create flash content are a joke compared to flash itself.

Okay, thanks... I'll see if I can get Flash 8. That was the program used to make said game so if it works (as it says) then I'll have my Flash utility.
