1. Video quality? Hard to say, though
Wildform Flix and Swideo have been known
to perform rather well.
2. As long as the AVI is converted to
SWF (as opposed to FLA), it should work
with Swish.
3. If you link directly to an AVI file
with a GOTOURL action, the visitor of
the website will have their default media
player popup to play it. It varies from
computer to computer because everyone's
settings are different.
If you want to do this, set the actions
of the button to:
ON RELEASE
GOTOURL "http://www.yourmovie.com/mymovie.avi"
TARGET "_BLANK"
(Replace the url with the url of your
movie.)

Will,
I have been using Wildform's Flix Pro with excellent results. It will convert Quicktime or avi files into swf format (Flash) with variable quality/levels of compression. Keep in mind that Swish creates "Flash" files (swf=Flash format), but will not do any conversions of this type.
You can then use the load movie function to place your movie into a sprite in Swish.

Vieno & Chris,
Thank both of you for your help. I think you have both told me what I need to know.
I'm probably going to buy one of the two packages Vieno mentioned.
I would like to hear from others about which converter they think does the best job.
thanks again.
