    Font's are unique
Imagine a web without pictures and only a system font.

Gets to be a pretty boring place
The originality of a font just as in print media
carries with it a symbolism. When a word or words
are chosen wisely so should the text empathize with
the words written. It stems from the history of print
media. Font's can be art or they can be craft.

Fonts come in several varieties. and can do more then
set the mood for a piece.

as for choppiness small text wreaks havoc with flash
format (and bitmap images)Which is why pixel fonts
were/are developed to maintain clarity of text and
still hopefully infuse personality in a body of text.

Fonts are art as well and icons to represent objects
more directly then words can. Such is the case with
    dingbats/webdings. A dingbat of a train represents
a train in all languages. It needs no translation.
