    Live Demo

Hi everyone, I just attended the Macromedia Live demonstration Of Studio MX 2004 last night. I have to say WOW!!! It looks incredible - I have already ordered my new copy.. I only have one thing to complain about...

All MX2004 products require activation! It seems to me that Macromedia is taking a page from Microsoft. I personally have my single license on 3 PCs - My notebook, for travel and demo / my home office PC / and my satelite office PC... Not to mention I upgrade my gear frequently. ie: I am planning to purchase a new notebook with a 17" wide format screen, can I bring my license over to that notebook? Or are they gonna pull a Microsoft deal and tell you - sorry that product is already activated?

Anyone have an answer... I would love to talk to someone at MM about this issue. Also I still need to have the product on 3 PC's - that hasn't been an issue untill now as licensing was per user (or atleast as I understand) therefore, by never using 2 PCs with the same serial I was ok. Now that may not be possible...

    Any thoughts?

I am not trying to cause issues, I am just voicing a concern...

legally, you are required to buy three liscences if you want a MM product on three different computers. This is how it has always been, even before activation.

I think I went to the same release, and I seem to remember two things...
First that you are allowed to install it on two separate machines, you just cant use them at the same time, which normally is not a problem.

Second, they promised that hardware upgrades and switching Flash between computers would be painless... Invisible even...

We won't know until we try it, but Macromedia has been pretty good to their word about everything else...

You may have a problem with 3 installations, you'll have to check with MM about that.

Actually, until now you have not been forced to buy 3 licenses - the way the license seems to have been worded was somthing to the effect of a per user license. I actually am only 1 user - and how could I use more than one PC in a development environment. Let's be realistic, I have a notebook that I demo new products to customers on - sometimes they have a change or two that are quick and can be done on site. This is where the notebook comes in. I have my development desktop as well... This unit get's used for most of the work and is used exclusively with two servers Linux/Apache and Windows 2000/IIS for testing in both environments. This is my main PC and is where I installed my primary use copy. HOWEVER - I also do a lot of work for clients that needs to be done on site... Some are government clients who do not allow me to bring a PC in at all, however - I need to supply my own software... What now, I currently install my software, then unistall when the project is complete and erase the restore point.

I don't think if I have 20 clients like this (I actually do have about 18 clients like this) that I should have to buy 18 licenses... For what to leave them behind?

Not to sound naive but I always saw Macromedia as a company that was "on our side". Our side being that of the web developer. I realize they need to make money, and I would NEVER PIRATE THEIR SOFTWARE... Some may think otherwise of someone who is doing what I have done installation wise, however - I really do not think that my use of Macromedia's products should be illegal.

    Does anyone agree with me?
