    Of modern authors, the ones I look forward to reading (and re-read on a regular basis) are:
    William Gibson, Haruki Murakami, J.G. Ballard

    I recently picked Burroughs back up. And whether or not you agree with the politics, I think that Subcommander Marcos of the EZLN is an amazingly gifted writer.

    I'm sure I can go on at great length about some classical authors (we have a room of the apartment dedicated to books which overflow into others), but I don't want to overrun this thread.

    Mark Billingham - stand up comedian, writes really good detective stories - excellent character development, tight, pacy plot development and a disturbed sense of humour. Worth a look for his three books - Sleepy Head, Scaredy Cat and Lazy Bones.
