    IK - Piston/Hinge type movements

    Hi to all,

I'm graphics design, don't know if tis is possible in Flash.

Imagine looking sideways on at an earthmovers arm.

It would have a couple of sections/arms elbows and a bucket at the end.

I would like to pull/push/rotate the bucket, & have the arms & joints 'follow' in out/arcing.

This is IK in 3DMax & other 3D apps.

This would be all 2d/side view only, anything like this for Flash.

At present can only think of doing it in 3d app then exporting.

Point me in the right direction.

    regards
    daniel

    Hi Tonpypa

    Yes, that kind of setup.

Could I build an asembly like that in Flash & then animate?
just want to do some simple sweeps & arcs but have the correct physics.

I've no idea where to start looking in flash.

Like your setup I wish to make an object; set a few pivot points & have them linked together. Simple IK.

Is this possible in Flash alone or some plugin.

    thank you for your time.

As I have never done anything in 3D and I can only imagine what are "pivot points" and "IK", I will try to tell what I did there (forgive me if I talk something trivial).

Anyway, I started by attaching movie clip of first section to the solid point. Now, it can rotate around that point, so we know its angle. When we know its starting point, angle and length, we can calculate the coordinates for its end point.

In the end point of first section we attach start point of second section. This section can rotate again around its start point and again we can calculate the position of its end point based on starting coordinate, angle and length.

You can find some interesting tests here:

I hope someone smarter has better answer for you.

    Good luck

This is certainly possible with a little simple trigonometry. I'm using the very same idea in an animated series I'm working on (no keyframes, all the characters are script-driven. If this is the kind of action you're looking for, I can give you the process.)

    Hi random_rabbit

thanks for taking the time, I was looking for real simple 'attach arm - to elbow' then move about all linked up.

Guess Im gonna need 3D software/export to flash & do things that way.

    Your site is very impressive.
