smileys interfere with code

I hate smileys anyway, but the most irriatatingthing about them is that if I type in the smiley syntax in the middle of a

 ;)

or

 ;) 

block, I get one of the buggers in the middle of my code. this is particulaly irritating when explaining javascript which often gets unintended smileys inserted.

And even more irritating, I posted a js resize example, and in the center of the flash <embed> there was the '<img src="images/sillysmiley.gif">' tag instead of the semi colon and bracket that was suppoed to be there, as above.

So.. surely a simple enough problem to solve?

.. can it be done?

There doesnt seem to be any facility in the user cp section to remove them from my posts.. I can handle seeing them in other's ( with difficulty ) but would love it if i never had to check that check box..

other forums powered by VBulletin engines enables you to disable signatures, smilies and avatars from others posts too, wow talk about dull, but still it's loads faster
