Uhhh, better dummy it down some more. The pictures were nice though.

Seriously, I have over 4 years of self taught html and some javascript experience, and all that is greek to me. Maybe it's a mental block? I don't seem to be too worried about it yet, I'm hoping the patent gets overturned and everything goes back to normal.

There's problems with Win98/IE, and sometimes with FP5. But it is the best and easiest way to display Flash movies and validate your code.

What a pain in the arse. >:O Looks like I've got lots of pages to sift through now and convert it so that the flash is put in with js.

I hope they make an auto work around in the next verions that will build an external js and write the script in both the external js and the html file.

At least it's simple enough and should only take a couple minutes per page... :-D

Macromedia promised some sort semi automated solution before the first of the year. But I haven't heard anything about it so far. And I've been struggling with the solution they have on their site.

Maybe if we all just leave our movies alone, the pop up's will become second nature while viewing the web

    Such as POP UP ADD's

It looks like one anyway..... the top says Internet Explorer dosnt it?

that would be a good idea. like the google toolbar with a flash popup accepter or something. way back someone told a story about the <img>. cant ie make a <flash href="..." width="..." height="..."> or something? and i dont mind. i have most of my links directly to the swf so the code doesent affect me

The only problem with that method iboss, is that preloaders don't work when you call a swf directly into a window. The whole file loads before anything happens.

but when u load large picturesthen u see them growing. and i have another method. place a frame in ur page and link the frame to the swf file. then make the frame the same size as ur movie and take away any scroll bars.
*edit* and wouldent the ie stuff also cause problems for java?

One of the methods I use when I have a large SWF file being loaded by loadMovieNum() is to create a silent wav file and put it in the SWF and set the sound to streaming. This allows the swf file to load in the manor you want.

It also depends on how your SWF was created. If the file is not a running timeline and just a bunch of MC's then this method may not wrk if you don't streach out the time line for the silent audio.

    Question:

Are there any new developments in the IE and other browser active content changes?

I'm still using 98 SE and IE 6. I don't even know anyone using the new browser or if it's even out yet. Have the popups started showing up?

And what's happening with the Doyle case? Microsoft seems awful quiet about that. I can't believe they are just going to roll over.

2 things are happening. MS has already appealed the case and, if the 2nd thing hasn't already happened by then, the appeal should be heard towards the end of 2004. The 2nd thing is the US Patent Office is re-examining the patent because of a request from the W3 and Tim Berners-Lee, not to mention all of the bad press the USPO has been getting about this. However, according to the USPO, the re-examination process can take up to 8 months so don't expect a reversal any time during the first half of the year.

Also, depending on if Doyle just hates MS or if he wants to extort as much money as possible, if the appeal doesn't work and the patent is not overturned, apple's safari, opera and browsers that ship with red hat are next. Hopefully, he'll leave non-profits like mozilla alone.

You can follow the USPO's re-examination process by going to http://pair.uspto.gov/cgi-bin/final/home.pl and under "Application Number Search", enter: 90/006,831. At the bottom of the page you can see the history of actions taken. Looks like nothing has happened since mid November.

Maybe the UN could send troops to occupy microsoft in the name of the free world and to force them to build an easy-to-use, w3c-compatible internet browser.

The Eola case started this, but now it's Microsoft that holds the ball, and they have an alternative to Flash that they will be introducing in the next year or so. So the IE browser is going to change even if we don't like it.
