    Media Temple.

Alot of the cool sites seem to use media temple. What is the reason for that? Are they providing free service to cool sites or something?

They just seem to be the only hosting company that seems to be getting "free advertising" by these cool sites.

They do sponsor a lot of sites but I guess they do it on a site to site basis.

You can consider it "sponsorship" when you see them on some of the more popular sites... sort of like getting your logo stickered to the side of a Nascar, or on the shirt of a skateboarder.
Having "MT" on your website has come about as a sort of Trend, since many of the major design players are using them.
Their service looks good, their prices are competetive, but they're really... really... trendy.

another host competing with (mt) for the designers market is acta divina. they offer free hosting to designers and studios if they send their clients to them, and also free hosting to graphics-related forums (notice the credit to them on chapter3.net, idiocase.com, and some other sites).

I use them just because I wanted to go with a larger company with a good reputation. I have been more than happy with their level of service. I can call and ask a human being a question without getting routed through automated operator lists and such.

They are reasonably priced, however one can get alot more for alot less.

If uptime is critical and you just can't afford to mess around, they are worth the cost. On less crucial sites, have been looking elsewhere solely for cost savings.
