about multiuser flash applications: research and question

Ok, there's a good xml faq that Tupps wrote.

Nevertheless, i was doing some research for xml socket servers that could be used to develop flash applications (i don't know if tupps has the server list updated), anyway, i found some cool socket servers, and here's the list:

    ElectroServer http://www.electrotank.com/ElectroServer/
free for up to 20 users connected, goes up to 2999USD if you need unlimited connections, good mx and mx2004 api

    Unity2 MDK http://moock.org/unity
Colin Moock's multiuser server, which comes with a development kit.
free trial which allows up to 5 users connected, 139USD for 100 users, 739USD for unlimited users, good mx and mx2004 api

    oregano http://www.oregano-server.org/
Seems pretty cool, haven't tried it yet, the best thing about this one is that it is opensource.

    fortress http://www.xadra.com/products/fortress/
starts pricing with 100USD for 100 users, and goes up for more. There's also a free trial

    polo socket server http://carlos-polo.com/pss
another free socket server, seems pretty simple, but works, it's developed by a spanish-speaking developer, from what i know, it's the only multiuser server in spanish. Free, only condition is that you add the logo somewhere in your site, to give him some credit.

I limit my search to socket servers developed using Java (great language, and now that AS2 is Java-like, it should be cool).

The limitations of these socket servers are usually installation, you basically have your own server with JRE1.4 installed, or have a hosting that installs it for you....that's hard.

Anyway, I like Unity2, pretty cheap, seems easy to develop, and is high profile (Colin Moock, a guru for flash developers i guess)

Electroserver is nice, easy to use, but goes expensive when u need a llot of user connections. It also has mx2004 api, which is nice.

Finally Oregano, seems nice, kinda hard to install, it requires a database connection, like MYSQL, and if you use mysql, you have to install the jdbc driver. The best about this one is that it is opensource

Fortress seems cool, but too complex, the other servers are specially developed having flash in mind, fortress has flash compatibility, but it's thought for other languages (specially java), which makes it biiig and, again, complex.

Polo server, free, it's nice, small, and doesn't have much support, i think this one is nice for nice simple applications, i might be wrong.

Well, that's my list, now I'd like to know if any of you have used any of this servers, and if any of you can recommend one, which one for u is the best, why, or why not. Any opinions?

    Cool thanks for that,

I will update the server list, it has been a while since I have updated the FAQ, but it has had to wait until I have finished a new tutorial (upgrade to the Latest News one that uses RSS and other good stuff).

I will let you know when I update the FAQ and list you as a contributor.

    Thanks

    one more server

    Hi guys,

I just happened to read this forum and thought I should tell you about our socket server called Offbeat. It is still a beta version but fully functional. The server accepts 10 concurrent client connections and can be downloaded at https://store.beamjive.com/products_offbeat.php.

It does not even try to compete with the other servers mentioned in this forum. It introduces a new way to create socket apps with flash and Java.

    Check it out and comment

    Cheers,
    Kai Hannonen
