promoting sites

i just created my web site and want to list or suggest it on yahoo, google, msn, etc. are there free, but effective ways to do so? many of those big search engines require a lot of money and i'm trying to save money.

many of those big search engines don't accept money for higher search results. Your best bet is to create a high quality site and have other high quality sites link to you.

You can submit your site to google, but it prefers to find sites on its own.

Submit it to dmoz while you're at it also

Best way to get name out: Get a reputation. People go to you, like what they see, then tell others.
