How to not close gaps in illustrator

    Hi,
I made a cicle with the ellipse tool, got rid of the fill, and made a stroke on it.
    The problem:
I need to cut the circle in half, but when i draw a rectangle and use it to "subtract" parts of the circle, the cicle is always closed up.
How do i prevent it from closing up?

    thanks

    what up Metal Fusion

I really don't under stand what your asking . But if you want to cut a circle in half just use the scissors , then just select the part you don't want and delete .
I think thats what you asking but if not e-mail me or reply here

Hi create the circle, then create a thin rectangle as seen in the attatched screenshot

you can align these to get them spot on, then select both shapes and in the pathfinder section (again see screenshot) select minus front (highlighted in pink) and there u have it.

remove the fill and stroke as seen at the bottom of the screenshot

    hope this solves it

    hi Black Phoenix,

Thank you very much for your reply, but that was not what i need.

I guess i didnt explain it clear enough.

    Here is the rexplanation: http://mylovechemistry.tripod.com/reexplain.txt

I am using illustrator cs, so my menu layout might be a bit different.

hi is it going on a white background ?

if so just drop a white rectangle over it, or use scissor tool, click the path then move a bit then click it again, then click on the section in between where u cut with the select tool onece highlighted click on delete

    see new screenshot

    this should do it

Hi it does work follow the steps in the new screenshot

select the scissor tool and click on the circles path see 1

then click it again see number 2

then with the arrow tool select the bit in between 1 and 2 (the square) then just delete it

    hiblack phoenix,

I tried as you said, but after i click the second point, my shape is reduced to a small square, which is the part i want to discard.

    How do i fix it?

Edit: I tried it again, and i was able to set 2 point successfully, but i cant seem to select the piece i wan tto get rid of.

deselect all by clicking on a blank area, then just select the tiny part you cut out and either Ctrl + x (cut) or hit the delete key

    yo ...
I think this is what you are trying to do ....

it is done very simply by:
    1: create a circle
    2: remove the fill
3: Using your "Direct Select" tool (A)
    - select one of the four points on the circle
    4: delete that point
5: using that same tool, select the two opposing points
    6: Join then (CTRL + J)
7: Copy and Paste the object
    8: Rotate, and align ...
    9: Enjoy

    hope that helped ...
    I attached a completed one,
