Thread: ..sorry for asking another DW question :( - I'm really stuck!!

    Hello all u Macromedia specialists....

I have started designing a homepage, and I need it to be shown in different resolutions... I know I can make like 3 versions i.e. 800, 1024, 1280 and let a javascript search for the users resolution and the direct him to the correct page...
I just think that's a hell of a lot work to do so I have decided only to make one resolution - that will turn up differently on different resolutions.
I'm thinking of starting with the 800 resolution and design that page - then if an user have a larger resolution everything just turn smaller...is this the way to do it?
My second question goes like this... I have two monitors connected to my computer, the one that I work on have 1280X960 resolution and the other one I then change in resolution to test how the page shows up according to the settings...
My problem is that I can't seem to set up the workingarea on the big screen so it fit's the proportions of the site I'm working on...
I can see there is a little menu in the bottom of DW3 where I can change the window to like 800X600 maximized - but still that seems not to work when I preview the site on the other screen The elements moves and do not line up as it does on the workarea..Layers are the worst to place - there is no WYSIWYG at all!!
Do I really need to set my Sony G400 to 800X600 when I design a 800X600 site?? - that seems not right to me....
Is there a way to set up a 800X600 document in DW on a 1280X960 screen so everything lines up perfectly when wiewed on a smaller screen with a lower resolution???

Any info would be appriciated - I'm really stuck!!!

    Hi Thomaz,

I always work in the lowest resolution - although this can result in DW's display being cluttered, it's the most sure fire way of ensuring the pages will work in that resolution.

The page will end up being "smaller" in a higher resolution unless you use tables and set the width to 100% - HOWEVER, if your site depends upon elements being vertically aligned, this can really screw it up.

Layers have a tendency to "move" when you preview/view the webpage. A good rule of thumb is that they'll be approximately one "shift+direction" to the right and down.

That doesn't make sense, does it..?

What I mean is that when you draw a layer, it will appear to be correct in DW but in the preview it will probably shift down and to the right of where you positioned it. This will usually be equal to the distance it would move if you edited it and moved it using Shift and down then Shift and right, so a good tip is to move the layer up and to the left by this same distance. Although you can't always be 100% sure they will move...

One other thing about layering - their positions are absolute, so don't put one on the extreme right of a 800x600+ res page, otherwise users in 800x600 will get horizontal scrollbars.

Guess who's been doing a lot of work with layers...

    Cheers,

    Kev

    ..hmm thx KevS!!

    - so ur saying that layers are not WYSIWYG at all - sometimes when I even try to move the layers alot they don't even show up altered in the preview

    - should I then change my 19" screen to 800X600?? and work from there - I can see that would help alot, but it seems stupid though

    - there must be a way to fix this, I cant belive I have to work in 800X600 - won't even think about how it would look if I should design a 640 page Does every webdesigner change their resolution whenever they design a webpage - if u do alot of multitasking between Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash and so on - I can't belive a Designer would settle for that solution - please tell me it's not so

    Thx ThomaZ

    Hi Thomaz,

I tend to design within "known" limits (in 1024x768). By that, I mean that say I create a banner image or a table, I'll never create anything wider than about 760 pixels. Once I'm happy with the basic layout, I'll drop my res down to 800x600 and check it all still looks okay.

If you create your own "template" for a page (that's safe in 800x600) this gives you a good guideline for future pages. (I've uploaded some test pages for my own site, http://www.wazzed.com that will illustrate this - be warned tho' that (a) the site contains profanities and isn't for the easily offended and (b) these pages are only work-in-progress pages, so a lot of links won't work and there's loads of errors.) However, you should get an idea of what I mean from there.

Although it is a pain to work in a low resolution, at the end of the day it's the only way you can REALLY be sure it'll work.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Kev

Thx again for trying to help me - I really appriciate it
So I guess I have to settle for that solution... I'll do that - no that I'm happy about it - but I guess ur right
I just can't belive how ugly everything looks when viewing a small page on a large screen

    - cya Kev!
