what's up with the microsoft patent infringement case?

so, whats the common thought about using the javescript document.write function to correctly show flash movies (etc.) in the browser? it looks like ms is not going to change the browser to make this have to happen so is anybody still putting their flash sites up like this or are they just doing it the old way?

I converted to the javaScript way, and to be honest found it a lot easier to use once its set up, a case of two short lines of code and job done. (one in the head one in the body)

if your a little more cleaner on the code provided in the sticky in the coffee lounge then you can even get it to validate XHTML transitional, something the original flash generated or dreamweaver generated code didn't...

so its staying on my sites for now unless something arises to prevent me from using it

When I heard of this case, I was thinking man, this is almost as world wide spread as the year 2000 conversion.. Imagine how many flash sites out there are using the EMBED Tag! Come on!

I still put my code in the same.

One plus side to it is that the content will still be visible if you don't use the javascript code, it's just that the user has to click a prompt to allow it.

While probably 98% of all sites built prior to last year used the embed tag, they will still be usable post-Microsoft/EOLA suit.

And, I agree with 1stBite... it is a much cleaner method of introducing your flash code. We used to use PHP includes to do this, but (since the embed tag must be dynamically generated on the client-side) we now use the Javascript method and are happy with it.

We'll all agree that the world would have been a better place without EOLA mucking things up, but it seems that this will do.

It will be interesting to see the fallout once the next-generation IE comes out.

I'm intending to ignore the issue until it goes away.

Seems to be working as well.
