How do you get scratches into areas in photoshop as seen in (just to name a few) www.eyewake.com (at the bottom) www.bluwake.com (near some of the edges) www.pixelranger.com (splash page)

basically you can use custom - 'grunge 'brushes to paint on areas, or you can use photographed textures, and overlay them over the images, erase areas change opacity etc to get the deired effect.

Most of that type of thing is accomplished by either painting or erasing with a 'grunge' style brush. Take a look through the sticky at the top of the forum titled "Extensive Tutorial List Part One" and you will find numerous brush resources. You can also do a google search for 'grunge brush' or similar and you will get plenty of hits. Once you get some brushes start playing around with them and see what different kinds of effects you can create.

You can also use scanned images of crumpled paper, scratched up glass, tin foil...whatever comes to mind. You can use the resulting image to create your own brushes or place it in a layer with the blend mode set to Multiply. This will make just the dark portions of the layer visible.

Lots of different ways to create that 'grunge' effect. Hopefully that will get you started.
