I've seen plenty of HIDIOUS logos for photographers locally..
My suggestion is to narrow down the type of customer you have.. and pinpoint a target audience.
Find a mood/feel that goes with that audience. This can decide a lot of things for you.
Another idea for you;
If you are desperate for a logo and very low on cash you should call up a local small graphic design school. Get a class to do it as a project.. Chances are, they'll be honored to do work for a 'real' client. I've seen it happen a lot. Works out fine usually.
Wouter999 has got the right idea in mind. Try using a sans-serif style font(plenty of nice one's out there), and spacing the letters of your name a bit. That would make it nice and simple. OR You can go to, http://www.favouritewebsiteawards.com/, click on "photography", and see what the general logo trend is.
