    [speed tests] Early Games

I've just started work on a little game, you may recognise it.

It's far from finished, (but it shouldn't take too long), I'm just wondering what type frame speeds you're getting, as there can be 20+ enterframes running at once, and it's mainly for eye candy.

I get a constant 31.5 fps (running IE) the movie has a transparent bg; and that really does help with movie speeds (the actual fps should not get any higher than 31, but with transparent movies, it really increases)

    and here's another speed test
    http://games.mikomedia.com/wip/smashdown/

    thanks
    Mike

For both I got 27-30 on a 1.4Ghz/640Mb RAM machine on Firefox.

Good job on the games, so far they look very polished off even though they're not done.

Both of them looking nice, especially the environmental effects in the first one.

    link 1:
    averages about 23-24fps
    minimum: 19fps
    max: 29

    link 2:
    averages about 27fps
    min: 23
    max: 29

Spec: Pentium 4 1.6Ghz, 256Mb RAM, FireFox running flash player 7,0,14,0

A small point, but I have to say I really like the way you've presented the information at the top of the screen. Maybe we could come up with some kind of standard line, just like yours but in selectable text, that way people testing the games could just select all the text in one go and paste it in their posts. Maybe even make it a standard component officially available on the FK games board for people to use when looking for feedback on their games.

    :)

    Hey,

My internet explorer is doing creapy so I couldn't play the files in browser. I did download the swf and played in the Flasplayer though; got 30.5 fps constant, so I don't think it should be a problem in the browser (proberbly 27/28 fps)

BTW: The games a re nice!

    nice work

    I got 25 fps for both on a g3 500

could you explain the transparent background and why it speeds things up?

you can pass a value called wmode which sets the movie to transparent bg,this is supposed to let it run a bit better in the browser but doesn´t work for all browsers (works best in ie and similar)
    Code:
    <param name="wmode" value="transparent"/>
by the way: really nice stuff token, slick presentation and smooth gameplay =)
like the sub invader game a lot =)
    (constant 31.5 fps,1.53 ghz)

    Thanks for the feedback,
The graphics aren't by me, they're by Samson and Snowfly, over at http://pixelation.swoo.net The original concept (Sea Invaders) was thought up by Chobo, a fulsail student following a game programming course. I'm producing the web version. You can see the graphic set over here

    smashdown are by Flaber.

I've wrote some code so it can be copied and pasted into movies (I've posted it in the Knowledgebase)

I don't actually know why it speeds things up, it just does, however, transparent movies are only supported by IE (i think, I don't know which versions)

For example, all my movies FPS are set to 31 (and when testing the the Flash Player, never get over 31.5 FPS)
When testing in the browser, without a transparent bg (the smashdown results) I get min: 24 max: 27.5. But with a transparent bg ( <param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> ) I get min: 31.5 max: 36.

I can't offer anymore of an explaination than the facts.

there's a post in the knowledgebase, maybe you could find a good home for it.

    Thanks again.

I'm not home so I was able to test both on a lower end PC (Celeron, 256MB RAM).

    In Firefox 0.8:
    [Sea Invaders] 15 Avg FPS
    [Smashdown] 20 Avg FPS

    In Internet Explorer 6:
    [Sea Invaders] 20 Avg FPS
    [Smashdown] 32 Avg FPS

(Both browsers had latest Flash Plugin)

I liked Smashdown a lot! Has a challenging pace to it
