    election night in canada!!

Just a reminder for all Canadian FKers out there to get out and vote today! It'll be fascinating to see how the election results are affected by everything from the new Moore movie to child pornography court cases. I fully expect to see a minority government when all is said and done, which could mean another election in the next year or so.

Just the general left/right swing within Canada. The conservative party was strongly in favour of sending troops to Iraq, and have constantly talked in the past of having closer ties with the US and with Bush, specifically. Bad press for Bush is in many ways good press for the liberals. Of course, most of the people who go to see the Moore movie in the first week are probably already liberal supporters, but it does keep the whole Iraq issue at the forfront of people's minds, even if it hasn't been the biggest debating-point of the election.

As to a minority government, that's when the party with the most seats doesn't actually have more that 50% of the seats. We've got four major political parties up here: Conservative (actually two parties--moderate conservative and extreme conservative--that just merged in the last few months), Liberal, New Democrat (extreme liberal), and Bloc Quebecois (Quebec seperatist party). So it's very possible that the party with the most seats might really have only 35% of the total seats. They need to rely on support from other parties to maintain government--they can't put up anything controversial or they risk forcing another general election.

Hey, another Calgarian! What riding are you in? I'm in Calgary east. I've actually probably talked to a lot of Calgarians who are voting Green (especially in Calgary West, with the whole 'Vote Out Anders' campaign). Too bad it'll still be conservatives in every riding, though.

Yeah, we still live in a very, very conservative city.
I'm in Lakeview, right down from Glenmore Park.

I heard that the latest polls gave the Green party close to 1M votes across the country! Not bad considering they got just over 100K last time around.

And the results are in: It's a Liberal minority government, with the conservatives a distant second, and both the Bloc Quebecois and NDP making considerable gains. And the Green Party picking up 4%, a huge deal because it now becomes an official party. Overall, it the balance of power took a huge step to the left.
