I haven't posted here in quite a long time.. but back again.

My topic is rather simple - looking for thoughts on what a good newsletter provides. We are looking at redoing our newsletter and wanted to get some feedback on what others use that get results from the newsletter.

Is it strictly content, with links back to the site? some promotional material mixed with straight content?

What are some thoughts on a good newsletter?

Depends. What is the primary goal of your newsletter? Is it to motivate purchases, bring visitors to your site, reinforce your brand, etc?

Also, who is your target audience and what is their interests and what is important to them?

Mystix questions are essential. The newsletter must be something that interest your subscribers. Mixing promo in with your content (like you mentioned) is the best way to do it.
