whats the difference between a movie clip and a graphic? they seem to do the same

The most important difference is that a movie clip can be given an instance name and controlled with ActionScript.
Both can contain animation. but the animated garaphic symbol is locked to the timeline it's on, while the movie clip has an independent timeline.
You can't have sound or most kinds of interactivity within a graphic symbol, while a movie clip can contain almost anything that can be in a Flash movie (except scenes).
Graphic symbols are best used as just that, static graphics, that can have multiple layers and contain multiple levels of other graphic symbols.
Some folks suggest that they've pointless because a static movie clip can do anything a graphic symbol can do and more, but I find it very useful to distinguish between the uses thry are most often put to. When I save something as a graphic symbol, I know at a glance how I'm using it.

You can give a graphic symbol a name!

Assign a linkage name to the graphic symbol. The new name that you assign allows you to controll the symbol!

I'll be damned! Never thought of that!
