Vector or raster - The decission!

I am currently creating an animated Flash movie and when looking at various sites and animation - like ninjai etc. I have noticed that - for things like backgrounds people use Raster images (JPEGS etc) rather than the vector originals.

Is there a reason for this? Is it simple a case of seeing hoe big (file size) the vector is compared to a JPEG or whatever?

it really depends on the effect, or look you want to have for the site. raster images are sometimes a lot easier to come by (especially when using photographs), as I think that making good original vector artwork takes time. Vector artwork usually has a relatively small filesize compared to a vector, although in simple raster backgrounds, the size difference is often negligible.
