Sea-Quake strikes southeast Asia, claiming hundreds of lives
http://www.theage.com.au/news/Breaki...?oneclick=true
One of the most-powerful earthquakes in years has triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into coastlines across Asia, killing more than 700 people in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, Malaysia and Thailand.
Tourists, fishermen, homes and cars were swept away by walls of water unleashed by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake, centered off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, where at least 94 people were killed by floods and collapsing buildings, officials said.

Holy ****. Ananova is reporting 8,600 deaths. This is a catastrophy far beyond anything we've had in the last couple of decades.

/\ Not quite, woot.
Just last year, there was the earthquake in Bam, northern Iraq. I think 20,000 were killed in that disaster alone.
Very sad, that we still can't tell when events like this are likely to happen and warn those that might be affected. But, even if we could, where would they go and would they leave all they had behind?

It's Comcastic!
I wonder if any flash kit members got hurt.. adit_ya_sharma said he lived in India.. That part of the world is a really bad place for an earthquake to happen.. population density is outrageously high..

Jeez!
I sure hope the people affected by this are ok. An 8.9 earthquake is pretty devastating

This is just an epic natural disaster. Those coasts have to be almost completely wiped out. The relief better start pouring in, those nations can't cope with this on their own.

Quite right. I stayed on a small, very low lying island in southern Thailand, where their whole economy was based on subsistence agriculture supported by tourism (which was eventually becoming the other way around). This disaster would have devastated both, with probably very little savings to be able to pay for rebuilding and the like.
